3.MD.C.5.b: Measure area by covering with unit squares.

    Official text

A plane figure which can be covered without gaps or overlaps by n unit squares is said to have an area of n square units.

What it means for your child

Your child finds area by covering a shape with unit squares, with no gaps and no overlaps, and counting them.

    Try it at home

    1. Cover a small box lid with square crackers or tiles and count them.
    2. Show a covering with a gap and ask, 'Why is this count wrong?'
    3. Draw shapes on grid paper and count the squares inside each.
