Quarter 1 · Foundations: Place Value, Stories, Forces & Communities — Children build on second grade with place value, adding and subtracting within 1,000, and their first multiplication facts. In reading they study story elements, characters and traditional tales, then use text features and main ideas in nonfiction, and write their first opinion paragraphs. Science explores pushes, pulls, friction and magnets. Social studies looks at communities, maps and landforms, the Native nations who lived here first, and how early communities began.
