Look for and make use of structure.

What it means for your child

Your child learns to notice how numbers and shapes are built, like seeing 7 × 8 as 5 × 8 plus 2 × 8.

Try it at home

1. Ask, 'Can you break this number into easier parts?'
2. Look at the multiplication chart and talk about rows that match.
3. Notice how a shape can be split into smaller shapes.
