Oregon standards
- Math
Oregon Mathematics Standards (2021)
Based on Common Core · adopted 2021
Adopted October 21, 2021. Grade 3 keeps Common Core content but regroups it: measurement and geometry are merged (3.GM.C.7) and data moves to a Data Reasoning domain (3.DR) in which children pose their own questions and gather data. Line plots and half- and quarter-inch measuring appear in the state's guidance for 3.DR.A.1, not in the standard itself.
- English Language Arts
Oregon English Language Arts and Literacy Standards (2019)
Based on Common Core · adopted 2019
The June 2019 standards apply in 2026-27; new standards adopted June 18, 2026 are to be implemented in 2028-29 and use codes like ELA.3.RL.1. The 2019 standards follow Common Core with the grade written first (3.RL.1, 3.RF.3a). Grade 3 matches what Third Grade teaches except 3.RI.6, which asks for firsthand and secondhand accounts.
- Science
Oregon K-12 Science Standards (2022)
National science standards · adopted 2022
Adopted June 16, 2022 with the same expectations as the national science standards, so Grade 3 matches Third Grade's science list. Codes use periods (3.PS2.1) and engineering design is numbered by grade (3.ETS1.1 to 3.ETS1.3). A revision is planned, but the state's pages give different dates for it.
- Social Studies
Oregon K-12 Social Science Standards (2024)
State's own standards
The 2024 standards, with ethnic studies built in, are required from 2026-27. Grade 3 theme is 'Our Community and Beyond', including Oregon's regions, natural resources, tribal lands, state offices and taxes. Codes look like 3.G.HE.6.

Grade 3 differences
In Oregon
ELA: tell a firsthand account from a secondhand account of the same event or topic (3.RI.6). Oregon's standard does not ask children to separate their own point of view from the author's, which is what Third Grade teaches here.
Suggested swap in Third Grade
ELA Week 24 (author's purpose and point of view): add a day comparing a firsthand account, such as a diary entry or letter, with a secondhand account of the same event.
In Oregon
Math: children generate their own questions about the classroom, school or community and collect data to answer them with scaled picture and bar graphs (3.DR.A.1).
Suggested swap in Third Grade
Math Week 35 (scaled picture and bar graphs): let your child write the survey question, collect answers from family or neighbors, and graph them.
In Oregon
Social studies: compare Oregon's regions and analyze Oregon's natural resources and how people use them (3.G.HE.6, 3.G.HE.7).
Suggested swap in Third Grade
Social Studies Week 4 (landforms, water and resources) and Week 17 (state project): choose Oregon and compare its regions (coast, valley, Cascades, high desert) and resources.
In Oregon
Social studies: use latitude and longitude to locate tribal lands, environmental regions and counties of Oregon and the Pacific Northwest (3.G.GR.2).
Suggested swap in Third Grade
Social Studies Week 3 (maps and globes): add a day on latitude and longitude, then find Oregon's counties and tribal lands on a map.
In Oregon
Social studies: identify state offices, leaders and their functions (3.C.PI.1) and explain how taxes pay for public goods (3.E.ES.2).
Suggested swap in Third Grade
Social Studies Weeks 19-20 (local government; three branches): add the governor's office and other state offices, and talk about which services taxes pay for.
In Oregon
Social studies: explain the difference between allies and bystanders when someone is targeted for who they are (3.C.IR.2), and recognize that identity and experience lead people to see the same event differently (3.C.IR.3).
Suggested swap in Third Grade
Social Studies Week 21 (citizens' rights and responsibilities): add a discussion of standing up for someone who is treated unfairly, and of how two people can see one event differently.
In Oregon
Social studies: weigh theories about how people first came to North and South America, using archaeological evidence (3.G.MM.3).
Suggested swap in Third Grade
Social Studies Week 6 (Native peoples): add a short look at how archaeologists study the first people in the Americas, including sites in the Pacific Northwest.
