3-PS2-3: Investigate magnets and static electricity.
Official text
Ask questions to determine cause and effect relationships of electric or magnetic interactions between two objects not in contact with each other.
What it means for your child
Your child asks questions and tests how magnets and static electricity push or pull on objects without touching, and how distance changes the force.
Try it at home
- Test which household objects a magnet attracts. Notice that not all metal things are magnetic.
- Rub a balloon on your hair and hold it near small bits of paper. Ask what happens and why.
- Move a magnet closer to a paper clip a little at a time and find the distance where it jumps.
