    5. 5.

Is 5/3 less than 1, equal to 1, or greater than 1? How do you know?

      (2 pts)

Answer: Greater than 1. Look for: 3/3 makes 1 whole, and 5/3 is 2 more thirds than that.

    6. 6.

Nora folds a paper strip into 3 parts. Two parts are wide and one part is thin. She says each part is 1/3 of the strip. Is she right? Explain.

      (3 pts)

Answer: No. Look for: the parts must be equal in size to be thirds; these parts are not equal.

Scoring: Items 1–2: 1 point for each part. Item 3: 2 points for 5 with a drawing or reason; 1 point for 5 with no drawing or reason. Item 4: 1 point for 4 equal parts with 1/4 for each part, and 1 point for 3 parts shaded with 3/4. Item 5: 1 point for "greater than 1" and 1 point for the reason. (2 pts)

      Answer: (a) 6/3 (b) 4/3

    3. 9.

Draw a number line from 0 to 1. Split it into fourths. Label each mark. Put a dot at 3/4.

      (2 pts)

      Answer: A line from 0 to 1 with 4 equal spaces labeled 0 (or 0/4), 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 (or 1), and a dot at 3/4.

    4. 10.

Is 11/8 between 0 and 1 or between 1 and 2? Explain how you know.

      (3 pts)

      Answer: Between 1 and 2. Look for: 8/8 is at 1 and 16/8 is at 2; 11/8 is 3 jumps of 1/8 past 1.

Scoring: Item 1: 2 points. Item 2: 1 point for each part. Item 3: 1 point for 4 equal spaces labeled and 1 point for the dot at 3/4. Item 4: 1 point for "between 1 and 2" and up to 2 points for a reason that uses 8/8 = 1 or jumps of 1/8.

Reteach if needed: Week 20, Week 23. Week 20 Days 1–2 (fractions from 0 to 1 on a number line), Week 20 Day 3 (fractions greater than 1) and Week 23 Day 1 (number line review).

Part 3: Equivalent & Comparing Fractions

    16 points

      (2 pts)

      Answer: (a) = (b) <

    5. 15.

Order these fractions from least to greatest: 2/3, 2/8, 2/4

      (2 pts)

      Answer: 2/8, 2/4, 2/3

    6. 16.

Are 2/4 and 3/6 equivalent? Draw a model or a number line to show how you know.

      (3 pts)

Answer: Yes. Look for: two same-size wholes, one cut into 4 and one cut into 6, with the shaded parts the same size (both are 1/2), or both fractions at the same point on number lines.

    7. 17.

Ella says 1/6 is greater than 1/4 because 6 is greater than 4. Is she right? Explain.

      (3 pts)

Answer: No. 1/6 < 1/4. Look for: when the whole is cut into more equal parts, each part is smaller; sixths are smaller than fourths of the same whole.

Scoring: Items 1–4: 1 point for each part. Item 5: 2 points for the right order; 1 point if two fractions are swapped. Item 6: 1 point for "yes" and up to 2 points for a correct model on same-size wholes. Item 7: 1 point for "no" and up to 2 points for the "more parts means smaller parts" reason.

Reteach if needed: Week 21, Week 22, Week 23. Week 21 Days 1–3 (equivalent fractions with strips, area models and number lines), Week 21 Day 4 (whole numbers as fractions), Week 22 Days 1–4 (comparing with the same denominator or the same numerator) and Week 23 Day 2 (review).

    3. 20.

      Ribbon lengths in inches: 1 1/4, 1 1/2, 1 1/2, 1 3/4, 2, 1 1/2, 1 1/4, 2. (a) Make a line plot marked in quarter inches from 1 1/4 to 2. (b) Which length is most common? (c) How many ribbons are longer than 1 1/2 inches?

      (4 pts)

      Answer: (a) A line marked 1 1/4, 1 1/2, 1 3/4, 2 with Xs: 1 1/4 (2), 1 1/2 (3), 1 3/4 (1), 2 (2). (b) 1 1/2 inches (c) 3

Scoring: Item 1: 2 points. Item 2: 2 points for a line within a very small wobble of 2 3/4 inches; 1 point if it ends at 2 1/2 or 3 inches. Item 3: 2 points for a correct line plot (1 point if one X is missing or misplaced), 1 point for 1 1/2 inches and 1 point for 3.
