Shapes, Data & Year Review
The big idea
Your child puts area and perimeter side by side, finding rectangles with the same area but different perimeters and the reverse. Then the unit names polygons, sorts quadrilaterals by their sides and corners, and reads and makes scaled picture graphs and bar graphs. A year-end performance task and a week of review bring every big idea of the year together.
Standards in plain words
- 3.MD.D.8 Solves perimeter problems: finds the perimeter from the side lengths, finds a missing side, and shows rectangles with the same perimeter but different areas, or the same area but different perimeters.
- 3.MD.C.7.b Multiplies side lengths to find the areas of rectangles in real-world and math problems.
- 3.MD.C.7.d Finds the area of a shape made of rectangles by splitting it into rectangles that do not overlap and adding their areas.
- 3.G.A.1 Understands that shapes in different groups can share features, such as four sides, and that shared features define a larger group; recognizes rhombuses, rectangles and squares as quadrilaterals and draws quadrilaterals that are none of these.
- 3.G.A.2 Splits shapes into parts with equal area and names each part as a unit fraction of the whole.
- 3.MD.B.3 Draws scaled picture graphs and bar graphs and solves one- and two-step 'how many more' and 'how many less' problems from bar graphs.
- 3.OA.D.8 Solves two-step word problems with all four operations, writes equations with a letter for the unknown, and checks that answers make sense with mental math, estimation and rounding.
What mastery looks like
- Finds both the area and the perimeter of a rectangle and lists rectangles with the same area but different perimeters.
- Names polygons by counting sides and vertices, even when they are tilted or uneven.
- Explains why every square is a rectangle and a rhombus, but not every rectangle is a square.
- Draws a quadrilateral that is not a square, rectangle or rhombus.
- Reads and makes a bar graph with a scale of 2, 5 or 10 and solves 'how many more' problems from it.
- Explains the math in the year-end performance task, including the last step of a two-step cost problem.
Materials
- Grid paper (1 square = 1 foot) and a ruler
- Square tiles
- Yarn or a string loop
- Shape cards cut from paper
- Index card to check square corners
- Colored pencils and highlighters
- Scissors and glue for the floor plan
Watch across the unit
Watch for: Using the multiplication answer for both area and perimeter, or counting inside edges of an L-shape as perimeter.
Try: Lay yarn only along the outside edge for perimeter, and tap the inside squares for area.
Watch for: Thinking a shape can belong to only one group, or that a tilted square is no longer a square.
Try: Draw the square group inside the rectangle group, and turn the shape and recheck its sides and corners; turning does not change its name.
Watch for: Reading a scaled graph as if each picture or line stands for 1.
Try: Point to the key or scale first and skip count by its number for every picture or line.
Pacing
Short week: Keep Monday's lesson and the Friday check. In Week 35, protect the two graph days and give the performance task at least one full session. In Week 36, choose the review day that matches your child's weakest unit.
Flex week: Week 32 is the flex week. Practice area and perimeter of shapes made of rectangles and finding missing sides, or enrich with the dream bedroom floor plan and the Garden Fence Challenge. End with a reflection that names one skill and the problem that proves it.
